Jesa Sang 제사상

Detroit Institute of Arts

Detroit, MI

Reading Guide

JesaSang, is part of Corean ceremonies to remember their dead, similar to an ofrenda. A table is set with offerings, usually food and anything the departed enjoyed. This altar honors the country that continues to fight for its sovereignty and the martyrs of the violence caused by imperialist forces, which divided and continues to divide so many families. Some images include victims of the Japanese occupation, as well as those who suffered during the Corean War, an ongoing trauma. Other Images include fights against American Imperialism on the Corean Land due to the puppet government and the victims who were shot during multiple events.
